Zameen - Calcutta: A city in Layers
Prithwish Daw is a Kolkata-based artist whose practice delves into the city’s vanishing histories and architectural memory. A graduate of the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship and Rabindra Bharati University, Daw has exhibited widely, including at the Kochi Student Biennale, Lalit Kala Akademi National Exhibition, Bangladesh Biennale, CIMA Award Show and Birla Academy of Art and Culture. He is a recipient of the Lalit Kala Scholarship, KCC Fellowship and grants from JCCA and SMS Group.
Created using materials such as plywood, wall dust, brick powder, lime mortar, acrylics and found pigments from demolished heritage buildings, “Zameen – Kolkata: A City in Layers” transforms fragments of Kolkata’s disappearing architecture into tactile memoryscapes. The artwork reimagines the city as a living palimpsest, where each surface bears the imprints of history, emotion and erasure. By integrating painting, sculpture, sound and video, Daw evokes the haunting presence of spaces that once thrived with life.
His work becomes both remembrance and reconstruction, a quiet act of preserving Kolkata’s fading soul through its own material remains.
