Think of others also, when you think about yourself". With this philosophy of our Founder, Late Shri U. N. Mehta, “UNM Foundation”, a not-for-profit organization established by the Mehta Family, - who are also promoters of Torrent Group. The Foundation carries out Social and Philanthropic activities of the Mehta Family and Torrent Group, with a focus on Community Healthcare, Education & Knowledge Enhancement and Social Care & Concern.
Under Community Healthcare, “REACH” (Reach Each Child) – A Child Health-Centric Initiative that provides free of cost comprehensive child healthcare services, paediatric camps have been conducted to screen more than 71,000 children (ranging from 6 months to 6 years) across 351 villages. In addition, in current FY 2021-22 – additional 7500+ children have been screened for Malnourishment through Anganwadi model in 649 incremental villages – hence, serving total 1,000 villages. Four well-equipped paediatric centres were established in 2017 at Sugen, Dahej, Balasinor and Indrad to provide medical care to children up to 18 years of age., More than 3,25,000 OPDs have been conducted across these four centres till 31st March 2022. Also, two more Multi-Purpose Activity Centres have been started recently at Waghi and Chhappi, and three other such centres are under planning stage.
In continuation, in to serveing the society, especially children, a state-of-the-art 150 bedded paediatric hospital “Balsangam” (erstwhile Sugen Paediatric Centre) has been established in “Rangtarang Complex” at, Sugen near Surat. “Sumangal” - A Community Healthcare Centre, has been established to provide healthcare to 500+ villages near SUGEN Mega Power Plant. Sumangal offers treatment for general ailments and also includes specialty treatment for dental, ophthalmology, dermatology, gynecology, orthopaedic & physiotherapy. In FY 2021-22 – both Major as well as Minor Surgeries along with 24*7 Emergency services have been started at Balsangamz. UNM Foundation has also established “U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre” (UNMICRC), a state-of-the-art 1,100 bedded cardiac hospital in Ahmedabad (Gujarat).
The Foundation also has programmes in the area of Education & Knowledge Enhancement. “Shardashish School” Initiative has helped re-build dilapidated school infrastructure at Chhapi, Memadpur, Indrad, Sabarmati and Akhakhol in Gujarat, benefitting over 15000 students every year by providing convenient and modern facilities for all round schooling of rural children. Sikshasetu - A Teaching – Learning Enhancement” programme focuses its efforts to improve quality of teaching and learning in primary schools by targeting students, teachers, and parents by using a scientific approach along with technology. Every year more than 15000 students are covered with very encouraging outcomes. Furthermore, the Foundation also provides need-based scholarships to bright but economically challenged students for pursuing global education opportunities under its “Shardashish Scholarship” Programme.
UNM Foundation also undertakes activities which benefit the general citizenry under its Social Care and Concern; projects like “Abhivyakti” promote promising artists in multi-disciplinary areas and connect them with the general public and “Pratiti” under which public gardens are developed. Till date, 10 have been developed and another 2 are under development. Plans are in progress to redevelop the historic Ahmedabad Townhall and VS Crematorium.
By constantly refining its approach, the UNM Foundation strives to ensure that the aggregate power of its initiatives brings about lasting improvements in society.
