Under the Sehra
Utkarsh Shakya is a visual artist based in New Delhi, who completed his Bachelor of
Fine Arts (BFA) from the College of Art, Delhi in 2024. Currently a resident artist at Space Studio, Baroda, his practice explores the complexities of memory, nostalgia and everyday life, often blending clarity with humor and satire. He has exhibited at Art Junction, The Lalit New Delhi and the College of Art’s annual group shows.
His artwork is Under the Sehra, an evocative oil painting on canvas. The title itself is a cultural reference, evoking the ritualistic concealment and intense anticipation associated with the ceremonial veil (Sehra) worn by a groom. The artist intentionally uses this powerful metaphor to explore the concept of hidden realities or complex feelings that exist just beneath the surface of public presentation.
The artwork challenges the audience to look beyond the initial visual simplicity and engage with the layers of concealed truth. By referencing the Sehra, the artist encourages viewers to question the nature of performance and expectation in life's important moments.
