Thresh/Hold
Pravin Kannanur is a Chennai-based multidisciplinary artist whose work spans theatre, visual arts and contemporary dance. A founding member of Magic Lantern Theatre and the art collective Basement 21, he has been a vital force in India’s contemporary performance scene for over three decades. His direction is known for blending classical text with visual experimentation, creating immersive worlds that challenge perception. Pravin’s contributions to theatre and culture have been recognised internationally, and he was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the Government of France in 2022.
His latest production, Thresh/Hold, is a collaborative creation that brings together artists Purisai Sambandan, Preethi Athreya, M. Palani, Maarten Visser and Elango Kumaravel. The performance explores the fragile boundaries between existence and transformation through a poetic interplay of sound, movement and text. At its heart lies the story of an old man, an eagle and a woman, each searching for redemption, hope and release. Through their encounter, the work examines how endurance, connection and faith emerge from chaos.
For Pravin and the team, Thresh/Hold is not just performance but a meditation on human resilience and the quiet beauty of interdependence.
