The Traveller
Ridam Kumar is a sculptor from Motihari, Bihar, currently pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Sculpture. Having grown up with a deep curiosity for mechanics and movement, he spent much of his early life building small flying machines and mechanical toys from everyday materials. This inventive spirit later guided his transition from science to the fine arts.
The artwork is titled “The Traveller” and is a life-size kinetic sculpture constructed from paper mache and metal rods. The piece captures a still moment during a long-distance train journey, where the sculpture represents a solitary passenger who is physically at rest. The work explores the emotional and psychological states commonly experienced in transit, including uncertainty, anticipation, restlessness and memory.
The creation of this kinetic sculpture was personally inspired by the artist's own experiences of migration and frequent travel. The work reflects the duality of modern movement: the body moves through space, while the mind is in constant motion, wandering through thoughts and distant places. It directs the viewer's attention to the persistent internal journey that is often overlooked during physical transit.
