The Last Laugh in No Man's Land

Dr Sreejith Ramanan started the Jalam Theatre Company in Paravur, Kerala as a community theatre project. He is a distinguished theatre professional who holds a Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award 2024 for outstanding contribution to the field of theatre as an actor and director over the past 30 years. Jamal Malik is one of his proteges who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts from the School of Drama and Fine Arts, Thrissur (University of Calicut) with a strong grounding in both classical and modern theatre, having performed in over fifty plays. He is also trained in hospital clowning, physical theatre and poetry recitation, focusing on the expressive possibilities of the body and voice beyond traditional text-based theatre.

The Last Laugh in No Man’s Land is a solo, non-verbal performance about a lonely soldier who is lost in the chaos of war and forgotten by history. It is about the universal condition of human beings caught in conflict told without words, using clowning, gibberish, movement, and object theatre. Soldiers are often remembered as martyrs or heroes, but rarely as fragile, foolish, or broken human beings. This performance challenges that myth and shows the soldier not as a symbol, but as a vulnerable body—full of longing, absurdity, and resilience.
