The Land in Between
Kanhaiya Trivedi is an award-winning film director, writer and photographer based between Mumbai and Kanpur. He completed a bachelor’s degree in law in 2020, before turning to visual arts as a self-taught artist. He later moved to London to pursue an MA in Directing. During this time, he won the coveted Straight8 film competition twice (2022 & 2023) and was selected for development programs with Film London & EAN Connect, and BBC Creative U.
The artwork is titled “In The Land in Between”. It is an immersive installation that recreates a bare room overlooking the Spiti Valley as both a physical space and a metaphorical threshold. The installation is rooted in an unexpected pause, blending video footage and 35mm BnW photographs made across the village. It presents a single ‘window’ of shared gaze, becoming a meditation on learning without instruction.
The personal connection stems from his experience of arriving to teach, only to find the classroom closed and choosing to remain with no defined role or purpose. Quietly observing the world, he wondered: “what if a classroom isn’t a place with walls and blackboards, but a condition of openness?” The takeaway for the audience is a meditation on learning without instruction and presence shaped not by action, but by attention.
