The Bhapang Project

The Bhapang Project is a soulful folk performance led by Jakir Khan, a traditional musician from Alwar who has dedicated his life to preserving and performing the Bhapang, a rare single-string percussion instrument native to Rajasthan. Trained through oral traditions passed down in his community, Jakir has spent years bringing this unique sound to larger stages and contemporary audiences.

The performance begins with a bhajan that blends Hindi and English, setting a devotional tone.
It places the Bhapang at the centre, showcasing its rhythm, resonance and emotional depth. Through song and sound, the group celebrates devotion and tradition while inviting the audience into a musical experience that feels both ancient and alive.

For Jakir, this performance is a way of honouring his heritage and continuing his family’s artistic legacy.

Through Bhapang, he hopes the audience will discover and remember this rare art form, carrying with them a deeper appreciation for the cultural and musical richness of Rajasthan.
