Pinnal - Tales of a Sisterhood

Chennai-based Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher Divya Nayar has been immersed in the arts for over 30 years. Her creative journey began with drawing and music, influences that continue to shape her holistic approach to dance as a dialogue between body, mind and spirit. Trained at Kalakshetra and mentored by Guru Sheejith Krishna,

Divya balances the rigour of classical Bharatanatyam with imagination and contemporary inquiry. For her, the form remains deeply rooted in tradition while opening itself to evolving possibilities.

At Abhivyakti, Divya’s Dakshina Dance Ensemble presents “Pinnal - Tales of a Sisterhood”. The title draws from the Tamil word for braid, which here becomes more than a marker of femininity. It transforms into a metaphor for inheritance, resistance, memory and resilience. Through Bharatanatyam, seven feminine archetypes emerge: the Mother, the Warrior, the Lover, the Seeker, the Rebel, the Sage and the Survivor. They are not linear characters but presences that embody the spectrum of womanhood across power, vulnerability and myth.

For Divya, the work is a reclamation. Long hair, often reduced to ornament or tradition, is reimagined as a symbol of strength. Pinnal invites audiences to experience Bharatanatyam as both classical and contemporary, a space where history, identity and art intertwine.
