Odissi Music: The Sound that Speaks

Namrata Dave is the only female percussionist performing the Mardala, the traditional drum of Odissi music. Born and raised in Mumbai, she began her musical journey with the tabla but found her true calling in the rhythms of Odisha. Her dedication led her to travel there and immerse herself in this ancient tradition that few outside the region have experienced.

Odissi music is one of India’s oldest classical traditions. Once integral to temple rituals, it has long remained overshadowed by Odissi dance and other classical forms. With Odissi Music: The Sound that Speaks, Namrata aims to bring this art form to contemporary platforms and new audiences beyond Odisha.

The production presents Odissi compositions through storytelling and percussion, tracing the music’s journey from temples to modern stages. It highlights its melodic richness, rhythmic complexity and spiritual depth, reminding audiences that Odissi music is both ancient and alive.

For Namrata, this project is a mission to create awareness, inspire dialogue and open avenues for Odissi musicians everywhere. She invites audiences to listen deeply, reflect and let the sound speak for itself.
