My Imaginary Homeland
Kolkata-based actor, director and playwright Sharanya Deyy has been immersed in theatre for many years, working with celebrated names such as Goutam Haldar and Manish Mitra in acclaimed productions including Othello, Thakumar Jhuli and Macbeth Badya. As the founder of 10th Planet, he has directed a wide repertoire ranging from Shakespeare’s Macbeth to Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, reinterpreting classics through a contemporary socio-political lens. His original works such as Khandobprastha, which explored Bengali folk genres in modern light, and Gangchil, based on Chekhov’s The Seagull, have received wide critical acclaim. A recipient of the CCRT Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, along with the Hriday Manch Samman and Papiya Adhikary Samman, his productions have travelled to several national and international festivals.
Sharanya presents “My Imaginary Homeland”, a play that follows three refugees from different countries and timelines as they search for a homeland that, in truth, exists only in memory and imagination. The story, deeply personal to him as the grandson of partition refugees, also resonates with the refugees he has encountered in life. Through this piece, Sharanya invites audiences to confront the global crisis of xenophobia, and to reflect on the fragile, often illusory nature of belonging.
