M.E
With over 17 years in theatre, writer, director and actor Gaurang Raval has carved a distinctive space in Gujarati theatre. He has written and directed 11 full-length plays, staged more than 200 performances, and created 17 street plays that address pressing social issues with clarity and conviction. His work spans the classical and the contemporary, the absurd and the comedic, with acclaimed productions such as Kusum Marathe Jive Chhe, an absurd thriller on memory and identity, Ankahee, a silent visual play, Ame Amrita Pritam, an adaptation of the legendary writer’s short stories, and Hu Ene Gamu Chhu, a sharp comedy on self-expression. Known for emotional resonance and risk-taking form, his theatre invites audiences to question, reflect and feel deeply.
At Abhivyakti, he presents “M.E”., a satirical yet piercing exploration of the Male Ego. Imagined as a surreal character, the Male Ego narrates and mocks its own existence, exposing how masculinity is manufactured by families, schools, peers and workplaces. Through sharp, darkly humorous vignettes, the play peels back layers of pride and control to reveal fragility and violence beneath. In the morgue of truth, ego is finally stripped bare, leaving audiences to confront the need to unlearn and reimagine masculinity.
