Childhood Tractor
Vijay Singh Beniwal is an artist from Jogiwala village in Haryana, known for his exceptional work in printmaking and painting. He has completed a postgraduate degree in graphics from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya. Beniwal's artistic expertise lies in etching and woodcut mediums. His notable achievements include the Rajasthan Student and State Award (2020/22) and the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation Merit Award (2023), as well as participating in the Kochi Muziris Student Biennale.
The artwork “Childhood Tractor” emerges from the artist’s deep connection to his village, where childhood unfolded in the unpaved streets and open fields of rural life. Inspired by the modest wooden toy tractor of his early years, the work transforms a simple object into a monumental form. Carved into its wooden surface are fragments of lived experience—echoes of farmers, fields, ponds and the vibrant life of the streets. The scale of the tractor, standing over six feet wide and seven feet high, shifts the intimate memory of a toy into a powerful spatial encounter.
The artist's memories are associated with the farmers of his village, their behavior, fields, streets, ponds etc. The children there do not see any shortage in the joy of the game even though they do not have valuable toys. This is an invitation for the audience to revisit their own memories of play, wonder and discovery, evoking the essence of childhood’s simplicity.
