His play Shakespeare Maharo Jamai captures this spirit. It tells the story of a Marwari troupe of travelling performers who move from village to village on a bullock cart, staging dramas for local audiences. On their journey, they encounter the stories of Shakespeare and are struck by the similarities between his famous plots and the tales they have been performing for generations. Yet while Shakespeare’s works are celebrated worldwide, their voices remain overlooked. The play challenges this divide and asks why stories told in one language or class are respected, while others are not.
For Dhrumit, the production comes from lived experience. He has seen how people judge stories by who tells them and how they are spoken. Through this work, he wants to remind audiences that stories belong to everyone and are universal.
