Dhara Rughani is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. Along with contemporary, ballet, and jazz, Dhara has a strong hold on many other Indian and international folk dance forms. She also performed in Abhivyakti Edition 5 in the production ‘There Comes Papa’, which was based on Raja Ravi Varma’s Painting. She’s also the founder of her own dance company, Dhara Rughani Dance Company which trains young artists and provides them with platforms to showcase their art. In this edition of Abhivyakti City Arts Project, she brings her production ‘Dhaag Samvad,’ which is a contemporary dance with folk music based on the traditional art form of embroidery made famous by the Kutchi Rabari women. Through intricate choreography, she captures the essence of the craft, blending tradition with modernity. She has derived a story of a mother and her daughter and how the mother does not let the art of embroidery become a bondage but rather a medium of liberation for her daughter.
