Tarini Tripathi is a 3rd generation Kathak dancer, trained by her grandmother, Guru Padma Sharma, and mother, Gauri Sharma Tripathi. Her lineage allows her to explore Kathak's diverse aspects while maintaining its formal vocabulary. Recently, she received the prestigious Nritya Nipun from the Nalanda Dance Research Centre and the Best Dancer Award at PECDA 2022. Shalmali Zankar is a performer, choreographer, and teacher with 20+ years of Kathak training under Guru Manisha Jeet. She’s won awards like the CCRT scholarship & Kalanaipunya Puraskar. She also explores spatial design & pedagogy, adapting dance to modern ideas & cultural values. In this edition of Abhivyakti City Arts Project, Tarini & Shalmali present ‘Alokik,’ a Kathak piece exploring Sankhya philosophy's cosmic union of Prakriti (material) and Purusha (consciousness). The performance, centred on the union of Shiv and Parvati, illustrates the philosophical tenets of creation, existence & liberation, highlighting the interplay of these forces in human experience. Rooted in the traditional form of Kathak, the duo highlights this narrative that can be found in one’s journey through the cosmos.
